It was a close game in Bonn, Germany on Tuesday night to open the Eurocup season, but when the dust settled, DKV Joventut emerged as a 71-76 winner on the road against Telekom Baskets Bonn. Joventut was leading by 11 in the last quarter, but the hosts fought back and managed to tie the game at 69-69 with 90 seconds to go. But Uros Tripkovic's three on a shot-clock buzzer allowed the guests to build the decisive margin. Telekom Bonn's 1 of 16 from the arc marked the fate of the hosts who now drop to 0-1 in Group D, while Joventut will start the season with a 1-0. Luka Bogdanovic led the Joventut scorers with 16 points, 10 of them in the second quarter and Clay Tucker also joined him with 16 more points plus 6 rebounds and 4 assists. For Bonn, Bryce Taylor led all scorers with 20 points, Chris Ensminger posted 17, Johannes Strasser added 13 and Alex King nailed 10.

Bryce Taylor opened the score for Bonn, but Kristaps Valters replied with a three for a starting 2-3. Johannes Strasser soon made it 7-6 with his three-point play and Tim Ohlbrecht soon slammed the ball to make it at hree-point game. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca scored four straight points to put Joventut back in the game, 11-10, but Alex King made sure that the situation didn't last long. However, Uros Tripkovic stepped up for five straight points of his own allowing the guests to get their first lead of the night, 19-20 in minute 8. Two more Strasser free throws went in to finish the first quarter, 23-20. Joventut started the second quarter with a 0-5 burst which soon evolved to a 6-20 thanks to Luka Bogdanovic's accuracy in offense as he climbed up to 10 points at that moment in the period. Chris Ensminger broke the spell for Bonn to put a 31-40, but Clay Tucker replied with a three to keep the guests at a safe distance. Koffi and Strasser traded points in the last breath of the first half to make it 35-45 as both teams went to the lockeroom.

The second half started with Ohlbrecht scoring for Telekom Bonn and Sonseca did the same for Joventut, but Bryce Taylor still gave the upper hand to the hosts by maintaining the lead under the 10-point mark, 39-47. Ohlbrecht and Strasser however pulled Bonn within 47-49 after the latter's three-point play. Now, Henk Norel maintained Joventut ahead with serious problems and Ensminger free throw made it a one-point game again, 50-51. David Jelinek hit free throws and a monster three to help Joventut maintain a lead when Telekom was closer than ever and then in the last attack, Tucker blasted a new bomb to make it 52-60 after 30 minutes. Antonio Bueno's three-point play made it an 11-point game again, 52-63, but Taylor and Patrick Flomo launched Bonn again within 60-63 for the 8-0 run despite the draught from the arc of the hosts, 0 of 11. Bogdanovic gave Joventut some air with a layup, and then Alain Koffi flew to slam the ball with no opposition and in the following play he blocked Strasser, 60-67. Ensminger and Norel traded baskets as the clock ticked away and in minute 37, Ensminger finally blasted the first three for Telekom Bonn after 13 attempts, 63-67, and Ensminger again scored once more as the stands went on fire. Koffi missed two free throws in the worst moment and Taylor finally tied the game, 69-69 with 90 seconds to finish the game. Ensminger fouled out and Valters scored two free throws for 69-71 and one minute to play. Joventut played long and just before the 24-second clock wailed, Uros Tripkovic nailed a three that gave the guests five points entering the last 17 seconds, 69-74. Taylor managed to score after two missed threes, but with 3 seconds Tucker went to the line and scored both attempts to seal the deal.

“Congratulations to Badalona. For us it was a difficult situation because tonight we were missing four starters from our team. At the end, we got tired. I am very proud of my team because we played well and never gave up. Badalona is a very good team, especially on the outside. That is what they showed tonight.”
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"We knew that it's hard to win on the road in European competition. In the third quarter we thought that it could be easy when we were ahead and we saw soon it was a mistake. However, we played well in the last plays, especially the triple by Tripkovic. Also Jelinek played a great game and he also hit a crucial three, so props to him. He helped us with the problems we had with Pere Tomas, who could not play at 100 percent. I was worried about Tripkovic when he left because we need him, as we need everyone when we are missing players due to injury. I think we are improving as a team day by day, and we will need to be at our maximum in the coming weeks, when the season starts to be decided."

KING, ALEX
Telekom Bonn
“Everybody thought we would lose the game because tonight we were missing four guys on our team, but we came out strong. Over the 40 minutes Badalona had more energy than us because we had to play with seven players while they had eleven. We can be proud of our team and we gave the fans a big show tonight.”
HERNANDEZ-SONSECA, EDU
DKV Joventut
"It is important to start with a win in the competition, and even more if the win is on the road. And even more if we take into account that we are having some health problems. It is very hard to pull a road win in the Eurocup, there are really good teams. We must not forget that Telekom Bonn has beaten the two German League leaders. The Eurocup is a great competition, it has a great value for the players. Now we have to face Unics. At home they are really strong and they have beaten Khimki, a Euroleague team, in the Russian League. We have to win all the home games and try to get something positive from the road ones."
