Newcomer Murcia makes for a winning start

UCAM Murcia made a winning debut in 7DAYS EuroCup by holding off Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 86-77 to register its first win in Group C on Wednesday. Murcia hit 12 triples on the night, and had Vitor Benite lead the way with 14 points. Pedro Llompart netted 13 on 3-for-3 from long range, and Vitor Faverani had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Boris Savovic hit 5-for-9 from three-point land for Buducnost, and finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Bojan Subotic scored 14, Shawn James had 12, and Zoran Nikolic 10 points plus 6 rebounds in defeat.

With team trading blows early on, Billy Baron scored 7 points, including a three-pointer that helped Murcia to 19-16 lead after first quarter. Consecutive three-pointers from Pedro Llompart and Vitor Fverani extended the margin to 25-16. Buducnost replied through J.R. Reynolds from the outside, and Zoran Nikolic inside, but Faverani and Lompart each hit another three to make it 34-24. However, Nikolic and Boris Savovic scored 12 points before halftime, including Savovic’s back-to-back threes that cut it to 38-36 at the break. Suad Sehovic put the visitors in front early in the third, but Nemanja Radovic scored quick 8 points before threes from Vitor Benite and Sadiel Rojas opened another double-digit margin, 57-47. Murcia entered fourth quarter up 60-52, but the visitors caught up with a triple from Bojan Subotic, and baskets from Shawn James and Reynolds. Triples from Martynas Pocius and Benite kept the hosts in front, but Buducnost made another attempt to rally, with three triples from Savovic that cut the deficit to 78-75. However, Faverni scored on next possession and Jose Angel Antelo made a steal to seal the win.

"We knew that Buducnost was a great opponent with talented players and a 4-0 record in the Adriatic League. They have great confidence and showed it by holding onto the game in tough moments. You can tell they have worked hard with a great head coach like Vlado Scepanovic, who will be even better as a coach than he was as a player. It was hard to us to get into the game. We were nervous and excited to play in Europe for the first time. It was hard for us to get into the game, also at the start of the second half, but we managed to take the initiative midway through the third quarter and dominate after that. They tried to play with two power forwards to open the floor, with their big guys and Marcus Williams hitting three-point shots to get closer, but we stayed calm, played with patience and managed to win."

"First of all, I want to congratulate Murcia. It was a historic game for them, their first in European competitions, and they did it with a win. They deserved to win tonight, playing a great game in front of their fans. This is our first game in the EuroCup this year. We tried hard without some important players but this is something we have enough time to work on. As for the game, we missed open shots at the end but Murcia had a great night and they deserved this victory. The key of the game was Murcia's great defense. They fought for 40 minutes and scored some important three-point shots in the fourth quarter, which was crucial."

"We played OK for 30 minutes but in the end, in the last couple of minutes, they made the most of our mistakes to make some shots and that is when the game changed. There was a really good atmosphere and that is always good for all players. I enjoyed playing here and wish Murcia good luck in the next games."
