Nymburk edges Seville, gets big road win

CEZ Basketball Nymburk grabbed its first road win in Group C by edging Baloncesto Seville 65-66 in Spain on Wednesday. Nymburk improved to 3-2 in Group C while Seville dropped to 2-3. Tre Simmons and Darius Washington paced the winners with 14 points apiece. Petr Benda added 10 for Nymburk. Willy Hernangomez and Kristaps Porzingis led Seville with 13 points apiece. Derrick Byars added 10 for the hosts, which led 13-10 after 10 minutes and extended their margin to 28-21 soon after that. Christian Burns stepped up for Nymburk and Simmons allowed the guests to reach halftime with a 32-34 edge. A layup by Nikola Radicevic gave Seville its last lead, 36-34. Simmons and an outstanding Washington allowed Nymburk to get a 54-62 margin with 4 minutes left. A three-pointer by Berni Rodriguez brought Seville within 65-66 and the hosts got the ball back but Radicevic did not get an open look and missed at the buzzer.

Jiri Welsch followed a layup with a put-back basket for a 0-4 Nymburk lead. Hernangomez stepped up with a put-back layup and free throws by Pierre Oriola kept Seville within 4-6. Alex Urtasun shined with a fast break layup, Garrett Stutz scored down low and Hernangomez gave the hosts their first lead, 11-8. Hernangomez made free throws and a layup by Tomas Pomikalek kept the guests within 13-10 after 10 minutes. Byars and Rodriguez struck from downtown early in the second quarter and a jumper by Porzingis gave Seville a 21-15 margin. Benda followed a layup with free throws and Washington brought Nymburk within 23-21. Radicevic sank a jumper and Byars nailed a triple for a 28-21 Seville lead. Burns and Pomikalek stepped up for Nymburk and a three-pointer by Simmons allowed the guests to get the lead, 32-34, at halftime. Hernangomez dunked soon after the break and a layup by Radicevic put Seville back ahead, 36-34. Simmons hit a triple and matched Urtasun's free throws with a layup for a 38-39 Nymburk edge. Darius Washington and Simmons shined with consecutive three-point plays but Urtasun and Oriola kept Seville within 41-45. Welsch and Benda gave their team a 43-49 edge after 30 minutes. Oriola shined with a put-back basket early in the fourth quarter which Simmons bettered with a three-pointer. Xavier Thames shined with a layup-plus-foul, Benda answered with a fast break layup and Welsch beat the shot clock with a jumper that made it an eight-point game, 48-56. Byars scored again and a three-pointer by Porzingis gave Seville hope at 53-56. Washington silenced the crowd with back-to-back triples that restored a 54-62 Nymburk margin with 4 minutes left. Byars hit a jumper, Rodriguez added a layup and a triple bt Porzingis got Seville within 61-64 with a minute left. Radicevic split free throws with 34.4 seconds left, Washington scored in penetration and a quick three-pointer by Rodriguez made Nymburk call timeout at 65-66. Seville got the ball back but Radicevic missed an off-balance shot at the buzzer.

" I think we showed a good effort defensively and played generally good defense. Knowing Seville is talented, but very young, we tried to use some matchup zone, and I think it helped us. When we started to execute our offense better, move the ball and make good passes, we got the lead even in the first half. Then it was a close game, but in the end we made some plays where we got steals and fast breaks and threes. It looked like our win would be little easier, but Seville came back with two big threes. We made a mistake, we should not have allowed them to shoot those threes. We had 19 turnovers, some of them were real gifts, but it is early for Christmas. It is a good win against a talented team, but we need to improve our game. "
