Asseco Prokom stunning Real Madrid 82-76

Asseco Prokom got closer to clinch a Top 16 berth in Group D by edging Real Madrid 82-76 in front of a sellout crowd in Gdynia, Poland on Wednesday night. Prokom improved to 3-4 in Group D while Madrid dropped to 5-2 and is second, right behind Panathinaikos, first at 6-1 and already qualified to the Top 16. Prokom also handed Madrid its first loss in Polish League in almost 48 years. Madrid had not lost in Poland since CWKS Legia defeated the Spanish powerhouse 73-62 in Warszawa on April 4, 1962. Qyntel Woods led the winners with 27 points, including a mid-range jumper that sealed the outcome in the final seconds. David Logan added 19 on 7-of-8 two-pointers while Pape Sow and Adam Hrycaniuk each had 12 for Prokom. Felipe Reyes led Madrid with 16 points. Jorge Garbajosa added 14, Travis Hansen had 13 while Darjus Lavrinovic got 10 for the guests, that trailed all the way in the fourth quarter but managed to get within 74-72 on free throws by Sergio Llull. Logan stepped up with a fast break layup while Woods followed a put-back basket with a key jumper to seal the outcome, 80-74, as Madrid never recovered.

Logan got Prokom going with a quick layup but Reyes split free throws and scored down low for a 2-3 Madrid lead. The hosts found a go-to guy in Hrycaniuk, that followed a close jumper with a put-back layup. Hrycaniuk soon capped an 8-0 Prokom run with free throws to give the hosts a 10-3 lead. Reyes kept pacing Madrid with a three-point play and Garbajosa struck from downtown to bring Madrid back to life, 10-9. Hrycaniuk scored again and free throws by Daniel Ewing gave Prokom some fresh air at 14-9. Logan scored off a steal but a three-pointer by Pablo Prigioni got the guests within 16-12. Woods kept pacing the hosts with a jumper and a three-pointer to give Prokom its biggest lead, 21-12. Madrid did not panic, however, as Lavrinovic downed a triple and Rimas Kaukenas also struck from downtown to bring their team as close as 21-18. Woods stayed on fire with another three-pointer but Hansen kept Madrid within 24-21 after 10 minutes.

Hansen sank a three-pointer from the right wing early in the second quarter. Woods shined with a driving layup that Lavrinovic bettered with a three-point play to put Madrid back ahead, 26-27. Mateusz Kostrewski took over with a layup in transition but a corner triple by Garbajosa silenced the crowd at 28-30. Prokom quickly entered the foul bonus but Madrid did not make the most out of it, as Sergi Vidal and Reyes sank free throws for a 28-32 Madrid lead. Sow hit a jump hook and Logan followed with an outstanding layup in transition. Harrington scored off a midcourt steal to get Prokom back ahead, 34-32. Sow capped an 8-0 Prokom run with free throws but Hansen and a corner triple by Prigioni kept the guests as close as 38-37. Hansen stayed on fire with his third three-pointer and Llull also struck from downtown for a 39-43 score. Woods joined the three-point shootout and followed Ewing's free throws with a put-back layup to fix the halftime score at 46-43.

Reyes nailed a close jumper immediately after the break, as Madrid had improved its man-to-man defense, with Hansen stopping Woods. Kaukenas shined with a wild driving layup and Reyes added a power basket for a 46-49 Madrid lead. Prokom went scoreless for more than 2 minutes until Logan buried a three-pointer. Garbajosa scored in penetration and Reyes nailed a mid-range jumper to make Prokom call timeout at 49-53. Hrycaniuk got the crowd involved with a two-handed dunk and Logan scored in penetration to give the hosts some hope at 53-56. Garbajosa hit free throws and Kaukenas added a coast-to-coast layup to boost Madrid's margin to 53-60. Prokom tried to get Woods and Logan involved to stay in the game. Logan stepped up with a driving layup and Sow followed an off-balance reverse layup with a put-back basket to get the hosts as close as 59-60. Novica Velickovic sank a free throw - his first point - but Woods scored in the low post and added a foul shot for a 62-61 Prokom lead after 30 minutes.

Sow scored down low early in the fourth quarter, as Madrid struggled to find the way to the basket. Kaukenas rescued the guests with a backdoor layup to make it a one-point game, 64-63. Woods took over with a high-flying layup in transition but Garbajosa answered with a jumper for a 66-65 score with 7 minutes left. Jan Jagla shined with a reverse layup, as Madrid used Lavrinovic and Reyes on court for the first time this season. Woods scored in transition for a 70-66 Prokom lead. Lavrinovic stepped up with a put-back layup that Ronnie Burrell matched with a power basket in transition. Garbajosa and Llull hit free throws but a put-back layup by Hrycaniuk and a fast break basket by Logan gave the hosts a four-point lead, 76-72. Woods took over with a critical put-back basket, good for a 78-72 Prokom lead with under 2 minutes left. Llull sank free throws with 47.6 seconds left but Woods finished a long Prokom offense with a mid-range jumper that sealed the outcome. Madrid kept trying but Prokom had sealed a historical home win that got the hosts closer to the Top 16.

Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
“We are very happy. For us this a great win over a great team. Every single one of my players showed great determination and proved that it would not be an easy game for our opponent. In my opinion, our aggressiveness and determination let us win this very important game. Today I want to say thank you to all my players because they did a great job.”
MESSINA, ETTORE
Real Madrid
“Prokom played an excellent game for forty minutes. Excellent defense forced us into a lot of turnovers while on offense they were able to create spaces and attack the basket, which was the key to their win. We didn't defend well and didn't move the ball on offense because of their aggressiveness. They deserved to win and we just need to go back to work and try to learn something from this loss.”

Players

SZCZOTKA, PIOTR

“We knew everything about Real Madrid, and we knew that it would be very hard to play against them. But we believed we could win anyway and this is the reward for my team. Our whole team worked hard for the final score and now we are very happy.”
LAVRINOVIC, DARJUS
Real Madrid
“Prokom played a much better game than the first one in Madrid. They knew how we play and they were prepared for us.”
