Olimpija beats Bursaspor again
Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana took a decisive step forwards towards reaching the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16 from Group D by downing Frutti Extra Bursaspor 80-97 on the road on Wednesday. Olimpija improved to 4-2, while Bursaspor dropped to 0-6. Jaka Blazic led the winners with 25 points, Rion Brown added 15, Kendrick Perry and Jarrod Jones each had 14 and Edo Muric 12 for Olimpija. Perry Jones led Bursaspor with 23 points, Xavier Munford added 13, Birkan Batuk had 10 while Omercan Ilyasoglou scored 11 points and dished 11 assists for the hosts, that trailed almost all the way.
Perry Jones got Bursaspor going with a three-point play and fed Munford for a dunk. Blazic and Brown each buried a triple and Mikael Hopkins added a layup-plus-foul in a 0-9 run that gave Olimpija a 5-11 edge. Kenny Kadji rescued the hosts, but Blazic insisted from downtown and Muric followed a three-pointer with a layup that made it 10-19. Perry Jones banked in a close shot, but Muric and Brown made it a double-digit game, 12-23. Perry Jones kept pushing the hosts and Oguz Savas added 4 quick points, but Perry Jones dunked and got help from Brown and Blazic to keep Olimpija ahead, 21-33, after 10 minutes. Jarrod Jones joined the three-point shootout early in the second quarter and Alex Hodzic added a jumper that broke the game open, 21-38. Ilyasoglu had 5 points in a 7-0 Bursaspor run, but Jarrod Jones kept Olimpija in control, 28-43. Batuk struck from downtown and Metin Turen added a layup to give the hosts hope at 33-45. Perry Jones and Tevfik Akdamar each buried a triple and got help from Savas to bring their team even closer, 43-52, at halftime.
Perry Jones buried a three-pointer right after the break. Blazic added a driving basket and Brown scored down low, but Perry Jones brought the hosts within 50-59. Muric sank his second triple and Brown sank a jumper to restore a 50-64 Olimpija lead. Perry Jones got help from Kadji and Batuk to bring the hosts within 59-68. Ivan Marinkovic stepped up with a couple of layups and Brown sank his third three-pointer, but Munford brought Bursaspor within 66-79 after 30 minutes. Ilyasoglu took over with a driving layup early in the fourth quarter, which Batuk followed with a triple to make it 71-79. Jarrod Jones and Blazic combined for all the points in an 0-8 run that sealed the outcome, 71-87, with over 4 minutes left. Bursaspor kept trying, but could not recover.
Pivotal performer
Jaka Blazic did it again. After scoring 33 points against Bursaspor on Monday, Blazic had another strong game against the Turkish powerhouse two days later. He finished the game with 25 points on 5-of-5 two-point shooting, 4-of-8 on three-pointers and 3-of-4 on free throws, plus 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 6 fouls drawn for a game-high PIR of 32.
Game-changing moment
Bursaspor led 5-2 early, but Olimpija answered with a rain of three-pointers. Blazic and Brown each hit one apiece in a 0-9 run that put the visitors ahead for good. Blazic sank another one and Muric also struck from beyond the arc to make it a double-digit game, 12-23. Olimpija never looked back after that.
Stellar stat
Offensive rebounds made the difference in this game. Olimpija pulled down 17 and only allowed Bursaspor to get 2. Those 15 extra possessions allowed Olimpija to take more shots and dominate the game with slightly lower shooting percentages (Bursaspor 63.3% 2FG, 40% 3FG; Olimpija 62.5% 2FG, 36.4% 3FG).

Omercan Ilyasoglu had 11 assists before halftime - and none in the second half. Even so, he set a new career-high in assists and posted his first double-double in his fourth game in the competition. Both teams return to 7DAYS EuroCup action next week. Bursaspor visits Nanterre 92 in a postponed Round 5 game on Monday, November 16, and goes to Greece to play against Promitheas Patras on Wednesday, November 18. Olimpija visits Herbalife Gran Canaria on Wednesday, November 18.
