BK Ventspils took its third win of the season by blasting Elan Chalon at home 81-71 on Tuesday night. A 30-19 in the first quarter marked the sign of the game, even though Chalon never surrendered. However, an inspired Aigars Vitols only had to do his thing to keep Ventspils ahead at a safe distance as Jimmy Baxter helped from the arc with a 4 of 5 from thta distance. Now, Ventspils is 3-1 in Group B while Elan Chalon drops to 2-2. Vitols led the winners with his 17 points, Baxter joined in to add 15 and Akin Akingbala tallied 13 and grabbed 10 boards. For Chalon, John Ford had 13 points, Bryan Bracey added 11 and Moussa Badiane hit 10.

Two triples by Jimmy Baxter and Uvis Helmanis launched Ventspils to a starting 6-0 lead but Elan Chalon soon tied at 6-6 after Shawnta Roger's three and three free throws by Rowan Barrett. From this point on, the scoreboard was balanced until Akin Akingbala and Aigars Vitols scored 10 points combined to make it a 24-14 game for Ventspils. Jermaine Guice and Barrett scored five points for Chalon to put an end to the first period, 30-19. Baxter blasted a new three to open the second period for Ventspils and John Ford reacted for Elan Chalon, but a 7-0 burst for the hosts allowed them to climb to 40-23. That difference was also maintained until the halftime break, 46-29. A 10-6 burst to open the second half allowed Ventspils to put a 53-35 on the scoreboard, while Ford tried to do everything in his hands to lift Chalon but Kaspars Cipruss late shot closed the third period with a 62-46 cushion for the hosts. Vitols and Veselovs took the initiative in offense for Ventspils as the scoring run went up to 12-7 for 74-53 in minute 34. Chalon tried for the last time with a timeout. At first it seemed to work as a 0-5 run capped by Bryan Bracey's three made it 74-58 fast but Justin Love broke the spell with free throws to get some more points so that Ventspils could catch some air. A lethal three by Baxter finally broke the game open as the scoreboard showed a 81-63 entering minute 39, allowing the hosts to get their third win of the season despite a late 0-8 run by Chalon.

"Congratulations to my team for the effort they showed today. I am satisfied with the game. OK, our opponents came back to minus-0 during the last five minutes, but everyone saw that we controlled the game from whistle to whistle. We won today because we were very well prepared, for Elan Chalon was the best offensive team in the ULEB Cup until this game, averaging more than 90 points per game and attempting about 27 three-point shots per game with a good percentage. But today we were able to stop them. We had seen the game in which they suffered a loss by 95-99.Their offensive power is self-evident but allowing opponents to make 99 points without going into overtime shows problems in defense and today we made use of them. If you take a look at the boxscore, then you will see that their leaders had a poor game. Our defense took out of the game both Roger and Barrett. We fought hard for rebounds as well, and that also made the difference. I would like to thank our fans for their support and we hope to win at least one of the next two games, which will be a hard task."

"Today we faced the same problem we have in the French League: we have too many injured players, to be more specific - the big guys. Badiane, for example, can't see properly with his left eye because he injured it in Friday's game. We will definitely look for some additional player to our team in order to increase our power under the basket. In essence that was the main reason why we couldn't stop their big guys. I even had to play with four forwards on the court during the game. We tried to break the game, but made a few mistakes and again went minus-10. Ventspils is a team which makes use of opponents' mistakes. As we were not able to be aggressive under the basket, Ventspils had many open shots behind the arc and were able to convert them into points. Nevertheless we managed to close the game with only minus-10, but in the end, Ventspils made a couple of dunks and drove the ball under the basket, which proves that we were not able to stop them."
