Cedevita crushes MZT for its fifth straight win

Cedevita Zagreb used a big third quarter en route to a 95-61 win over winless MZT Skopje Aerodrom on Wednesday night in the Croatian capital. It was not only Cedevita’s fifth consecutive win, but also the club’s biggest-ever margin of victory in the 7DAYS Eurocup and improved the team’s record to 5-2 for sole possession of second place in Group A, while the loss mathematically eliminated MZT from Top 16 contention, and also promoted Nizhny Novgorod into the next phase. Ryan Boatright led the winners with 20 points on 4-for-6 three-point shooting. Ra’Shad James netted 15, Miro Bilan had 14, and Toni Katic contributed with 10, as Cedevita’s 34-point victory crushed the club’s previous best – an 18-point victory margin on the road at Krasny Oktyabr Volgograd from two seasons ago. Jure Lalic scored 14, and Stefan Sinovec had 10 points in defeat.

A three from Charlon Kloof and a pair of baskets from big man Jure Lalic had MZT up 6-11 early, but a three-point play by Karlo Zganec and a three-pointer by Boatright fueled a 10-2 run that got Cedevita going. James had 6 points to help push the margin to 26-17 after 10 minutes, and the difference reached 13 points midway through the second, before three-pointers from Stefan Sinovec and Marko Simonovski started a 1-10 run that cut the deficit to 37-33. But that turned out to be as close as the visitors got. Cedevita led 44-38 at halftime and behind Tomas and Boatright scored first 6 points of the third quarter. They did not stop there, as Boatright hit two and James one three-pointer during an 11-0 run that opened a 65-43 margin. The lead broke the 30-point barrier with a basket from Dzanan Musa at the halfway point of the fourth quarter, as Cedevita was well on the way to its largest-ever win in the competition.

Head Coaches

MRSIC, VELJKO
Cedevita Zagreb
"After our loss in the Adriatic League, we managed to recuperate in the two days that we spent in Zagreb and get a few things right. The second half tonight looked better than the first. Ryan Boatright changed a few things compared to the start of the game, he started distributing ball quicker. I hope he will play even better; he showed he can adjust to what we demand of him. We played well on offense and defense, and now we will know even before the last game which opponents we will play in the Top 16. Toni Katic also did good job tonight with his ball movement."
NAZOR, ANTE
MZT Skopje Aerodrom
"I would like to congratulate Cedevita. They outplayed us tonight. We didn’t play hard enough and we weren’t focused. Cedevita outrebounded us 46-29 and that says a lot. I used this game to give the chance to all of my players because I am still getting used to them and they also need time to get used to me."

Players

JAMES, RASHAD
Cedevita Zagreb
"We showed great team effort tonight. In the second half we showed great defensive intensity and we were able to defend our home court."
LALIC, JURE
MZT Skopje Aerodrom
"We played terrible. We fought in first half, but the second half was really bad. We looked like a bunch of amateurs. The good news is that we have another game in three days and we must use that game to show that we can play better than tonight."
