Gran Canaria’s Eurocup campaign came to an end Tuesday despite a 71-58 victory over Fraport Skyliners. Granca improved to 4-2, but lost a three-way tiebreaker with Banvit BK and Lokomotiv Kuban, who took Group E’s two tickets to the Last 16. Spence Nelson paced a balances Granca attack with 15 points and 9 rebounds, Marquez Haynes and Javier Beiran added 9 points each and Taurean Green dished 6 assists for the winners. Jimmy McKinney carried Skyliners with 27 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting and Jermareo Davidson posted 16 points and 16 rebounds. The loss left Skyliners winless in the Eurocup this season.

The game was tight early with tie scores at 2, 5 and 7 points. McKinney and Davidson heated up to push the Skyliners ahead 9-16. Spencer Nelson fueled the hosts with 8 first-quarter points and narrowed the gap to 3 before Quantez Robertson ended the opening quarter on 13-18. A McKinney triple boosted the lead to 8 early in the second quarter, but a pair of Juan Palacios baskets cut the deficit in half and a Beiran three made it 23-26. Green tied the score and Alando Tucker completed the Granca comeback to make it 30-28 at the break.

Michael Juice Thompson brought Skyliners back within 1 and McKinney kept the visitors close, but a strong third quarter from Marquez Haynes was making that tough. A Haynes triple and Green free throws put the hosts out in front 47-38 late in the third quarter, which ended at 49-41. McKinney connected from deep again to bring his team within 5, but Nelson sealed off the paint and Beiran hit a three to put the hosts up 12. Nelson tripled with four minutes to go to make it a 15-point game and Laurence Ekperigin added two more baskets to ice the win.
