Montepaschi Siena had a good start in the 2010-11 Turkish League Euroleague by thrashing Cholet Basket 76-44 at home in Group C on Thursday. Montepaschi leads Group C along with Fenerbahce Ulker and Regal FC Barcelona. Marco Carrareto and Ksistof Lavrinovic led the winners with 13 points apiece. Bo McCalebb added 12 while David Moss had 10 for Montepaschi. Antywane Robinson led Cholet with 9 points. Montepaschi outrebounded Cholet by 43-29 and forced the guests to committ 21 turnovers. Montepaschi led 22-10 late in the first quarter but a very effective 2-3 zone defense and an improved transition game allowed Cholet to tie the game, 26-26, midway through the second quarter. Montepaschi used a 9-0 run to break the game open, 46-34, after the break. The hosts soon made it a 20-point game, 60-40, and did not find major problems to add its first Euroleague home win this season.
Montepaschi placed Carrareto in its starting lineup to guard Nelson, but he got Cholet going with free throws. Moss stepped up with back-to-back jumpers and Carrareto nailed a running triple for a 7-2 Montepaschi lead. Cholet struggled to score for more than 2 minutes, as Montepaschi excelled in defense behind an outstanding Carrareto. McCalebb capped a 9-0 run with free throws, as Sammy Mejia took over with a running jumper. Carrareto scored down low but McCalebb sank foul shots and fed Moss for a triple and forced Cholet to call timeout at 16-4. Robinson tried to change things with consecutive baskets but McCalebb and Rimas Kaukenas kept Montepaschi way ahead, 20-8. Mejia sank a jumper that Kaukenas matched with free throws. Vule Avdalovic scored in transition to fix the score at 22-12 after 10 minutes.
Randal Falker picked up a loose ball and put it in to bring Cholet within 22-14 early in the second quarter. The guests had improved with a 2-3 zone defense and Claude Marquis in the middle guarding Ksistof Lavrinovic. Montepaschi went scoreless for more than 2 minutes while a free throw by Falker and a wide open triple by Fabien Causeur forced coach Simone Pianigiani to stop the game at 22-18. Avdalovic joined the three-point shootout to cap a 0-11 run and bring Cholet as close as 22-21. Malik Hairston rescued Montepaschi with a power basket and Tomas Ress sent the crowd to their feet with a wild dunk. Causeur buried his second triple and a tip-in by Robinson tied it at 26-26. Lavrinovic made free throws but Mejia tied it again at 28-28. Ress sank a long jumper from the left corner and Carrareto beat the buzzer with a bomb from downtown for a 33-28 Siena lead at halftime.
Milovan Rakovic took over with a reverse layup immediately after the break and Kaukenas added a driving basket but Marquis scored twice in the paint and Robinson sank free throws to keep Cholet within 37-34. Rakovic kept pacing the hosts with a layup and McCalebb fed Kaukenas for a fast break basket, good for a 41-34 Montepaschi lead. Cholet tried to improve its ball circulation with Avdalovic back on the floor but free throws by McCalebb and a three-point play by an unstoppable Rakovic made the hosts restore a double-digit margin, 46-34, after a 9-0 run. McCalebb took over with a wild driving layup that Robinson bettered with free throws. Lavrinovic and Mejia traded baskets but an unstoppable McCalebb kept Montepaschi out of trouble at 52-39. Lavrinovic sank 3-of-4 foul shots to make it a 15-point game, 55-40, after 30 minutes.
Cholet needed a quick comeback to keep its options alive but the guests went scoreless for more than 2 minutes. Montepaschi tried its second lineup with Zikos Zisis and Pietro Aradori at both guards. Carrareto buried his third three-pointer and followed it with a fast break layup that sealed the outcome, 60-40, with over 7 minutes left. Cholet tried to power the offensive board but the hosts controlled the game tempo and had started to use long possessions to run the game clock down. Nelson sank a jumper and even when Cholet switched back to a 2-3 zone defense, Montepaschi had enough patience to read it well and find open shots. Lavrinovic stepped up with back-to-back baskets and by the time Aradori made free throws, everything was said and done. Montepaschi had cruised to a well-deserved home win while Cholet faces another tough challenge by hosting defending champion Regal FC Barcelona next week.
