Wembanyama historic in Nanterre’s second win

U18 Nanterre 92 came back from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to collect its second victory at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Kaunas by knocking off fellow debutant U18 Casademont Zaragoza 86-94 in overtime with Victor Wembanyama setting a new competition record in blocks. Wembanyama tallied 22 points, 15 rebounds and 9 blocks - eclipsing the previous ANGT single game record of 8 blocks. Maxime Ekono picked up 20 points and 5 assists and Mateo Donnadieu nailed 5 three-pointers in the final 8 minutes of regulation and overtime for 17 points for Nanterre, which finished Group A play with a 2-1 record. Zaragoza lost its third game in the group despite Alvaro Martinez tallying 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Daniel Arjol had 17 points and Christian Hernandez added 15 points in the loss.

Zaragoza jumped ahead 8-3 and a Josep Cera three-point play helped push the lead to 13-5. The Spanish club was up 17-8 before Wembanyama converted a three-point play and Jason N’Joumeck nailed a three-pointer in a 6-16 finish to the quarter and a 23-24 Nanterre lead after 10 minutes. The game remained tight in the second quarter until Hernandez scored five straight points to give Zaragoza a 37-31 cushion. But Nanterre kept Zaragoza scoreless in the final 4:24 minutes and led 38-41 at the break. The game was tight early in the third and Wembanyama gave Nanterre a 45-46 lead. Zaragoza went on a 10-0 run and five points from Hernandez left the Spaniards ahead 62-48 after 30 minutes. Wembanyama started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, which also started the Nanterre comeback. The French side pulled within 66-63 before two Martinez free throws. Donnadieu came off the bench to hit two free throws and evened the game 68-68 with a three-ball. Cera followed with a trey but Donnadieu was on target again from long range. Arjol appeared to have given Zaragoza the win with his triple with 7.7 seconds to play but Donnadieu drained another trey with 5 seconds left to tie the game again and force the extra session. And Donnadieu knocked down two more three-pointers to start overtime and a three-ball plus two foul shots from Ekono made it 84-89 to give Nanterre the win.
