Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar was the first team to record a road win in difficult Group E by topping BC Donetsk 75-78 in Ukraine on Wednesday. Mantas Kalnietis led the winners with 17 points. Jimmy Baron added 14 while Simas Jasaitis had 13 for Lokomotiv. Ramel Curry had 23 points for Donetsk and Vojdan Stojanovski added 13. Kalnietis and Andrey Zubkov shined early to give Lokomotiv a 8-21 margin. Curry rescued Donetsk and brought his team within 17-23 late in the first quarter. He got some help from Stojanovski and Ivan Radenovic to bring the hosts even closer, 36-37, near halftime. A three-pointer by Stojanovski completed the hosts' comeback, 49-48, after the break. Jasaitis and Kalnietis stepped up for Lokomotiv and Nick Calathes shined early in the fourth quarter to make it a nine-point game, 62-71, with over 4 minutes left. Curry singlehandedly brought Donetsk within 75-76 with 9 seconds to go but Baron made free throws and the hosts could not shoot in its final possession.
Aleks Maric got Lokomotiv going with a layup that Curry matched with a jumper. It didn't last long, however, as a three-pointer by Baron sparked a 0-9 run that Zubkov capped with a jumper that made Donetsk call timeout at 2-11. Stojanovski rescued the hosts with a jumper with free throws but Kalnietis and Jasaitis made it a double-digit game, 6-16. Zubkov scored again and a three-pointer by Kalnietis boosted the guests' margin to 8-21. Curry and Dainius Salenga rescued Donetsk and a jumper by Dmytro Gliebov brought the hosts within 17-23. Aleksey Savrasenko fixed the score at 17-25 after 10 minutes. Zubkov and Denys Lukashov traded baskets early in the second quarter and a jumper by Kalnietis restored a 19-29 Lokomotiv margin. Lukashov and Baron exchanged triples and Kalnietis scored again but Radenovic and Curry combined for all points in a 7-0 run that brought Donetsk back to life, 29-34. Jasaitis scored again but Curry stayed on fire and got some help from Stojanovski to make it a one-point game, 36-37. Maric and Kalneitis stepped up right when Lokomotiv needed it most to boost the guests' margin to 36-40 at halftime.
Songaila hit consecutive jumpers right after the break to tie the game at 40-40. Kalovan Ivanov scored twice in the paint but a jumper by Jasaitis and back-to-back three-pointers by Baron kept Lokomotiv ahead, 44-48. Gliebov kept pacing Donetsk with a layup and a three-pointer by Stojanovski completed the hosts' comeback, 49-48. Jasaitis answered from downtown and Kalnietis scored off a steal to put Lokomotiv back ahead, 49-53. A three-pointer by Lukashov and free throws by Stojanovski provided another lead change, 54-53. Radenovic scored in the paint but Kalnietis struck from downtown and fed Savrasenko for a layup that fixed the score at 56-58 after 30 minutes. Savrasenko scored again early in the fourth quarter and Calathes erased Lukashov's basket with a layup for a 58-62 Lokomotiv lead. Songaila and Lukashov stepped up with consecutive baskets to bring Donetsk a bit closer, 62-64, with 7 minutes to go. A three-point play by Maxim Sheleketo ignited a 0-7 run that Calathes capped with a jumper that made it a nine-point game, 62-71. Curry took over with a jumper, a dunk and a three-pointer to get Donetsk within 71-74 with 57 seconds left. Kalnietis and Sheleketo split free throws and Curry brought Donetsk within 75-76 with 9 seconds to go. Baron did not miss from the foul line and Donetsk could not shoot in the its final possession.
