Adecco Estudiantes of Spain made a giant step into the next round when it walloped visiting Darussafaka of Turkey 105-79 on Tuesday in Group C. Estudiantes put on an mpressive all-around shooting show that featured 6 players scoring in double figures. A 22-5 run to start the second half took all the suspense out of the outcome as Estudiantes handled leads of up to 30 points the rest of the way. German Gabriel led the winners with 15 points, and was followed in order by Corey Brewer and Felipe Reyes, who had 13 each, Hernan Jasen with 12, Iker Iturbe with 11 and Andres Miso with 10. Burak Sezgin paced Darussafaka with 19 points, while Vincent Jones put up 17, Richie Frahm 16 and Erdem Turetken 13. Estudiantes is now 5-3 and moved into a second place tie with RheinEnergie Cologne, a loser on Tuesday at Chalon. Darussafaka fell to 2-6.

Darussafaka jumped to a 0-5 lead on a three by Sezgin and a layup by Jones before brewer got Adecco Estudiantes on the board with a three. Once he got the hang of it, Brewer was unstoppable. He hit another from downtown, and then his third tied the game 12-12 after 6 minutes, then he, Jansen and German Gabriel extended the run with jumpers that put the locals ahead 18-12. Koruk stopped the bleeding for Darussafaka, but Loncar then buried the fourth three-pointer of the quarter for Estudiantes, good for a 21-14 lead. Loncar would later add a free throw before the quarter ended with the hosts having commandeered a 24-16 advantage. The scoring pace subsided somewhat in the second quarter, but Darussafaka was only able to cut a point off the lead after 17 minutes, 35-38. Then the threes started falling again for Estudiantes. Now, Nacho Azofra and Iker Iturbe connected back-to-back from behind the arc as the hosts' advantage swelled to 15 points, 43-28. The lead reached 45-30 before Vincent Jones, with a three-point play, and Frahm with a layup got the last 5 points back for the visitors. At halftime, Estudiantes still led 45-35 behind 12 points from Brewer, while Jones was up to 13 for Darussafaka.

The third quarter was the one that ended it. Coming out of the locker room, Adeccuo put on a five-minute blitz that amounted to 22-5 and left Darussafaka too far behind at 67-40 for any hope of recovery. The Estudiantes inside crew had joined the party, most notably big man Felipe Reyes, who picked up 8 points in the run, and Rafa Vidaurreta, who was up to 9, while Loncar added another three-pointer. Just as impressive was the defense. Darussafaka got nothing inside, and when it tried to do something outside with Sezgin and Richie Frahm, last week's hero against RheinEnergie Cologna, the triples were not happening either. Soon enough, with some defensive effort, the visitors chipped away. Young center Cevher Ozer banged a three and then Sezgin copied him as the deficit was cut all the way to 73-56, a 5-18 reaction since the middle of the quarter. But there it ended with Estudiantes scoring the final 4 points of the quarter for a 77-53 advantage going into the last one. Estudiantes controlled the advantage without problems, boosting it to 90-61 with 6 minutes left on another three by Azofra. The final countdown didn't change the matter at all as Estudiantes punched its ticket to the next round.

Head Coaches

HERNANDEZ, PEPU
Adecco Estudiantes Madrid
"Today we played a great defense. We needed to convince ourselves taht we could maintain our concentration for the 40 minutes. There are times that we lose it and I hope that we play well from today. The things I'd like to highlight are the concentration and intensity that my team maintained every second of the game."
