Zenit cruises to victory in Murcia

In a clash of two previously qualified teams, Zenit St. Petersburg went on the road to defeat UCAM Murcia 77-90 on Wednesday. With the win, Zenit improved its record to 4-2 and won the potential head-to-head tiebreaker over Murcia by overcoming a 2-point Round 3 loss. Murcia, on the other hand, dropped to 4-3. The visitors used three-pointers from Janis Timma to jump to an early double-digit lead and Zenit raced away to a 20-point margin in the second quarter. Murcia briefly cut the deficit to single digits late in the third quarter, but never seriously threatened to make a comeback. Ryan Toolson netted 22 points, Timma scored 16 and Stefan Markovic ran the offense with 14 points and 11 assists. Kyle Landry also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in victory. Facundo Campazzo scored 17 points for Murcia, while Billy Baron and Vitor Faverani each netted 12 in defeat.

Zenit stormed out of the gate behind Timma and Toolson, who combined to score all the points for the visitors’ first double-digit lead, 5-16, after only six minutes. Nemanja Radovic and Faverani stopped the bleeding for the hosts, but only briefly. Zenit had a 10-22 advantage after 10 minutes and a triple apiece from Timma and Toolson fueled a 2-10 run that opened a 14-32 margin only three minutes into the second stanza. Campazzo and Martynas Pocius hit from downtown for Murcia, but Zenit remained in control, and Pavel Sergev’s three-pointer opened a 21-41 margin late in the second quarter. The visitors held a 32-47 edge at halftime before threes from Landry and Evgeny Valiev extended the difference to 32-53. Baron, Radovic and Campazzo helped cut the deficit to 57-66 in the last minute of the third quarter, but Aaron White and Toolson did not need much time to extend the lead back to double figures. The hosts never got closer than 8 points the rest of the way.

Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"We had a good start to the game, defensively and offensively. We led by as many as 20 points. In the second half we did not get to the foul line as often, so our opponent was able to get the score a little closer. But, despite this, we played very well in defense and managed to keep the gap at 10-12 points until the end of the match. I am pleased with the game and even more than that with our high shooting percentage."

Players

CAMPAZZO, FACUNDO
UCAM Murcia
"When things go badly, the ball weighs a thousand kilos, the rim looks like a ring for your finger and we seem like the worst shooters in the world. We're not the worst in the world when things go bad and we're not the best when things go well. We have to understand that: we'll do things bad, we'll do things well, but we have to keep with our progression. It's a question of confidence and we need our fans' support now more than ever. The only way to confront the situation is to lift our heads and stay together."
