Pascal Perrier-David scored a buzzer beater to give Swiss champion Benetton Fribourg a stunning 78-77 upset win over previously undefeated Triumph Lyubertsy on Tuesday night in Group E. Fribourg trailed by 16 in the third quarter, but the team never quit in front of its fans and used the energy and a clutch defensive stand by Ken Johnson to get back in the game and then hold off the favored visitors. Fribourg improved to 2-2 and will visit Hapoel Galil Elyon next week. Triumph next hosts Antwerp Giants. After an even opening period, Sergey Toporov hit a pair of triples and added another basket in a 2-15 surge that gave Lyubertsy a 34-48 halftime lead. However Johnson keyed an 11-2 run at the end of the third to get Fribourg back and Oliver Vogt came up big in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for Perrier-David's heroics. Dave Esterkamp led Fribourg wit 17 points, Johnson had 15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks and Tresor Quidome scored 13. Ognjen Askrabic led Triumph with 13 points and 8 rebounds, Toporov and Fedor Likholitov scored 12 each and Mire Chatman, Terrell Lyday and Uros Slokar added 10 points apiece.

Fribourg won the opening tip and took the lead on a Perrier-David triple at the end of a third-chance attack. Likholitov and Askrabic were Triumph's main offensive references early, while Johnson kept the hosts involved as the first period ended in a 22-22 tie. Quidome and Douglas Tshomba scored the first two baskets of the second period, but the momentum soon went with the visitors. Fedor Dmitriev's three-point play tied the game and gave Triumph a narrow lead and soon Toporov shined with a pair of triples and another basket in a game-breaking 2-15 surge that gave Lyubertsy a 34-48 halftime lead. Triumph's advantage twice reached 16 points early in the third quarter, but Fribourg kept fighting. After Toporov made it 49-62 midway through the period, Johnson stepped up with 6 points in an 11-2 run to cut the gap to 60-64 heading into the final period. Vogt cut the gap to a single point three minutes into the quarter and soon a Quidome triple gave Fribourg its first lead since the early second period. Likholitov tied it immediately and Askrabic put Triumph back on top, but Vogt's free throws tied it and put Fribourg ahead and Tshomba stretched it to 74-71 with three minutes to go. Askrabic tied it with a three, but Esterkamp set up Vogt for a basket to keep Fribourg on top. Igor Zamansky made a free throw to get Triumph within 1 with a minute remaining. Toporov made a key steal, was fouled and hit a pair from the line to make it 76-77, but after Johnson stepped up with a pair of bocks on the defensive end, Perrier-David would have the last laugh with a basket at the buzzer to give Fribourg the stunning win.

Head Coaches

LEYROLLES, DAMIEN
Benetton Fribourg
"It was a great satisfaction. In the second half we came back in the game with heart and quality basketball. Ken Johnson was dominant but all the players focused and did the necessary effort to win. The defense allowed us to come back in the game and to make the difference on the buzzer."
EREMIN, STANISLAV
Triumph Lyubertsy
"First of all I want to congratulate Fribourg. The team was strong and their defense was very good. Only the second quarter was good. After, it was terrible. We did a lot of fouls on the important points. We couldn't concentrate and Fribourg was better, stronger and more concentrated."

Players

JOHNSON, KEN
Benetton Fribourg
"It was a very difficult game for us with 16 points behind in the first half. In the second half, we focused back and won the match. We came together tonight. The difference with last week is all in the mind because this team was stronger and bigger. We had the focus, that was the key of the match."
