ASVEL wins at St. Petersburg to edge closer to Top 16

ASVEL Villeurbanne erased a double-digit second-half deficit to beat Zenit St. Petersburg 89-92 on Tuesday at Yubileyny Sports Palace and thus close in on a ticket to the Top 16. ASVEL improved to 5-3 with its second win over Zenit this season and ensured it will have at least a share of first place in Group D at the end of Round 8. In fact, ASVEL will advance on Wednesday if both Tofas Bursa and Herbalife Gran Canaria win at home. Zenit dropped to 4-4. Justin Harper paced the winners with 18 points, while rookie Alpha Kaba posted 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. A.J. Slaughter tallied 14 points and 6 assists and Charles Kahudi added 11 for ASVEL, which won despite Round 7 MVP John Roberson playing just 13 minutes and scoring just 2 points due to foul trouble. Sergey Karasev paced Zenit with 27 points, Drew Gordon and Demonte Harper netted 12 apiece and Marko Simonovic scored 11.

The teams traded baskets early with Karasev for the hosts and Amine Noua for the visitors each scoring twice in the first four minutes. Simonovic’s layup that made it 14-9 midway through the opening quarter marked the first time either team led by more than one possession. Zenit continued to stretch its lead with Kyle Kuric connecting from downtown for an 8-point advantage. ASVEL responded 6 points – including 4 free throws by Kahudi – to close to within 21-19 after 10 minutes. Kaba tied it with a slam on the first play of the second quarter and his next dunk put the visitors ahead 27-28. Soon Kaba took a seat with 3 fouls and Zenit regrouped to lead 34-30 after a three-point play by Evgeny Voronov. Back-to-back Karasev threes took the lead to a new high at 48-39, but ASVEL used a three by Slaughter and Kahudi free throws to rally back to 50-47 at the break.

Scottie Reynolds delivered 2 assists and Gordon scored twice in a 6-0 Zenit spurt to start the second half, which resulted in a quick ASVEL timeout. Karasev’s first basket of the second half gave Zenit its first double-digit advantage, 58-48. Ivan Lazarev split free throws to put the hosts ahead by 11, but DeMarcus Nelson scored twice to give ASVEL hope at 63-57. A pair of threes by Nicolas Laprovittola restored a double-digit margin, but free throws by Slaughter and Kaba made it 69-63 through three quarters. ASVEL got within 4 three times before Slaughter drained a triple to make it 76-74. Kaba continued to shine as ASVEL drew within 1, but a three by Simonovic gave Zenit some much-needed breathing room. However David Lighty stepped up with a pair of baskets to tie it at 82-82 with four minutes remaining. Evgeny Valiev put the hosts back on top and Karasev added free throws, but Kaba’s put-back got ASVEL back on track and Justin Harper silenced the arena with a triple for an 87-89 lead with 18 seconds to go. After a timeout, Nelson stole the inbounds pass and drove for a layup that all but sealed the victory.

"The most important was to win the game. It’s a very close group and now we have both wins against St. Petersburg, so we get one win plus the point spread. With two more games, we’re looking good. We just have to get that next home win and to get qualified. We were more aggressive [in the second half]. This is a fantastic team. Karasev scored 20 points [in the first half] and he’s the most important player on this team. They have a lot of talent, but he’s the motor. So we really did a good job on him. He’s tough and he almost pulled out a win on the very last possession. So that was the key: our defensive reaction in the second half. "
