Eriksson's late heroics lift Gran Canaria past Ulm
In a back-and-forth game that went down to the wire, Herbalife Gran Canaria beat ratiopharm Ulm 97-84 at home on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 5-3 and improved its chances to make it to the Top 16 while Ulm dropped to 2-6 and is all but mathematically eliminated from Top 16 contention. Ulm would need to win its last two games - its win against Zenit conditions the difference it needs against Trento to win a potential three-way tie - and expect Zenit and Trento to lose against Tofas and Gran Canaria, respectively. Marcus Eriksson paced the winners with 26 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting - three of them in a final 18-0 run that gave Gran Canaria the win. D.J. Seeley added 17 points, Ondrej Balvin and Eulis Baez each scored 14 and Oriol Pauli got 10 points for the hosts. Trey Lewis led Ulm with 28 points, Toure Murry added 15, Da'Sean Butler had 14 and Luke Harangody 12 for the guests. Ulm led 64-66 through three quarters and 79-84 with four minutes left, but Seeley, Albert Oliver and an outstanding Eriksson fueled an 18-0 run that gave their team a critical win.
Balvin got Gran Canaria going with a dunk, but Fotu and Lewis fueled a 0-7 run that gave Ulm an early 2-7 lead. Fotu hit a jump hook and Lewis added a three-point play. After Baez stepped up for Gran Canaria, a three-pointer by Harangody boosted the visitors’ margin to 10-17. Seeley rescued the hosts with back-to-back triples that capped a 9-0 run, and soon added free throws to give Gran Canaria a 22-19 lead after 10 minutes. Luke Fischer scored down low early in the second quarter and Eriksson added a jumper, but Murry and Benimon helped Ulm tie it at 26-26. Baez bettered Harangody's floater with a three-point play and Balvin added a pair of dunks for a 33-28 Gran Canaria lead. Eriksson downed a couple of jumpers and Baez added free throws to boost the hosts' margin to 41-34. Lewis hit a turnaround jumper off a great spin move and Benimon dunked to bring Ulm within 41-38 at halftime.
Eriksson followed a triple with a layup soon after the break and Oliver
added a turnaround jumper for a 48-42 Gran Canaria lead. Lewis scored twice around the basket, Butler copied him and Benimon added a tip-in to bring Ulm within 51-50. A three-pointer by Harangody put the guests in charge, 54-55, but free throws by Baez and Pauli gave Gran Canaria a 58-55 edge. Lewis kept pushing Ulm with a driving layup and Murry added consecutive three-pointers. Pauli put the hosts ahead, 64-63, but Lewis banked in a big triple for a 64-66 Ulm edge after 30 minutes. Butler followed free throws with a three-pointer, but Balvin and Anzejs Pasecniks helped Gran Canria get within 73-74. Lewis swished a second three-pointer, Harangody erased Balvin's slam with a layup and Butler added a second-chance basket for a 78-81 Ulm edge. Lewis insisted from downtown, but Eriksson struck three times from downtown in a final 18-0 run in which Seeley also had 5 points that allowed Gran Canaria to get another win.
